Mission Statement: The purpose of the Verde Valley Homeless Coalition is to identify and create real solutions to alleviating homelessness in the Verde Valley.
As you may be aware, our community’s most vulnerable individuals are not so very different from the rest of us. They often find themselves in situations whether through poor planning, an unexpected crisis, mental illness or addiction. Many of the homeless suffer from unhealthy coping mechanisms, which often stem from traumatic experiences whether physical or mental, leading to an inability to cope with life events.
We can imagine that, given their lives and their circumstances, we might have ended up in the same place. We are eligible for tragedies too. This does not mean that we are meant to rescue them, as they are on their own learning path, but we can treat them compassionately, because they are part of our community. The VVHC wants to offer them a hand up, understanding that we all need help from time to time.
The VVHC is seeking to expand the services in our area. We have moved from an advocacy group to an active service group and have received 501 (c) (3) status. We are asking the community to attend our meetings or to make a paypal donation to our account at Cornucopia. Your contributions will be invaluable to us in fulfilling our mission of creating real solutions to alleviating homelessness in the Verde Valley. Please consider our request and attend the VVHC meetings or donate to our mission. Our next meeting is January 25th from 12-1pm at Spectrum Healthcare in Cottonwood.
The Verde Valley Homeless Coalition
The Verde Valley Homeless Coalition presented at the Cottonwood City Council on January 16th regarding Ordinance 637. This ordinance allows for an exception to the fire sprinkler rule for emergency shelters. It passed unanimously. The Fire Chief and Fire Marshall have requirements, but they are things we have already decided to do. This means a go ahead for our Cold Weather Drop-in Center at the YES The Arc cafeteria from 6pm-7am on nights when the temperature is forecasted to fall below 35 degrees. We still have a few kinks to work out and we need volunteers, but we are almost there. The biggest hurdle has been crossed. There will be a Mental Health First Aid training as well as fire extinguisher training for the volunteers. Anyone interested or willing to be an awake volunteer (we need two per night) please contact me. Thank you to all who came to support the Verde Valley Homeless Coalition.
